About the North Tower Expansion Project

Kadlec Medical Center has launched a construction project that will bring a 5-story building  featuring 10 new operating rooms, a floor of private patient rooms, a 36 bed clinical decision unit, and space to allow for future expansion. The project is expected to generate 400 new jobs at Kadlec over the next 5 years.

“A great deal of work has gone into the planning for this project,” said Bill Moffitt, chair of the Kadlec board. “We believe it will enhance our ability to meet the health care needs of our patients from the Tri-Cities and surrounding region.”

A key component includes the construction of ten new operating rooms (and space for 12 if needed) on the second floor of the project known as “the north tower”.

“Our surgical services are extremely busy, frequently requiring us to schedule surgeries evenings and weekends,” said Rand Wortman, president and chief executive officer.

Kadlec will also build what is known as a Clinical Decision Unit. This will be a 36-bed outpatient unit located on the first floor. It will allow Kadlec’s clinical team much-needed flexibility to care for patients that may not be sick enough to be admitted, but require observation. These patients could range from a patient that comes into the Emergency Department, a patient recovering from outpatient surgery, or someone involved in an imaging study or cardiac catheterization.

“We are excited at what the clinical decision unit will provide for our clinical staff,” said Wortman. “As demand for Kadlec services continues to grow, this unit will help move a patient seamlessly through the treatment process, whether it’s someone who eventually needs to be admitted, or merely observed for a few hours from the E.R.”

Kadlec will build a 28 bed wing of private patient rooms on the fourth floor of the tower. It’s part of Kadlec’s goal of becoming an all private room hospital. Kadlec will convert some semi-private rooms on the 3rd floor of the existing hospital into the private rooms within the tower.
